Study on Eliciting Inversus Spinal Bending Movements of Gekko gecko by Electrical Mesencephalon Stimulation

Abstract:To thoroughly study the locomotion control function of Gekko gecko’s midbrain, 10 fixed head of G. gecko were used in electrical mesencephalon stimulation experiments. During the experiments, the animal’s mesencephalic areas were electrically stimulated via micro stainless steel electrodes and its responses during stimulation were observed. The results implied that locomotion responses such as spinal bending, limbs’ movements could be elicited in different depths of mesencephalon. As the change of stimulus depth at the same tract, locomotion response elicited may change. Some stimulation tracts elicited ipsilateral spinal bending in periaqueductal gray area while elicited contralateral spinal bending at ventral tegmentum. The approximate distribution areas of two kinds of nucleus that modulate inversus spinal bending movements were confirmed by histological analysis of stimulated mesencephalic region.
