Effects of Shenmai Injection in UUO Rats with Renal Interstitial Fibrosis

Abstract:ObjectiveTo investigate the effect of Shenmai on renal interstitial fibrosis in rats with due to unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO). Methods 54 SD rats were randomly divided into sham-operation group, UUO group and Shenmai group. Rats in UUO group and Shenmai group underwent left unilateral ureteral ligation. Rats in sham-operation group had their ureters manipulated but not ligated. Shenmai injection was injected intraperitoneally (3 mL/kg•d ) in Shengmai group. Meantime, same volume of saline was given in sham-operation group and UUO groups as Shengmai group. The rats were sacrificed on the 7th, 14th and 21st day. Renal tissue superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) content were detect and renal tissue α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) were assessed by immunohistochemistry study. Results The tubulointerstitial pathological changes of Shenmai group was better than that of UUO group. Compared with UUO group, Shenmai group showed a significant increase in SOD and a marked decrease in MDA. Conclusion Shenmai injection can reduce renal oxidative stress injury induced by UUO, reduce the expression of α-SMA in renal interstitial fibrosis.
