Home Range and Activity Rhythm of the Reintroduced Giant Panda “Shenglin 1” in Dujiangyan, Sichuan Province

Abstract:Understanding home range and activity rhythm of reintroduced giant panda Ailuropoda melanoleuca is essential to avoid risks and increase knowledge of reintroduction of giant panda in the future. Here we studied home range and activity rhythm of the reintroduced giant panda “Shenglin 1”, using radio-tracking from August 2005 to April 2006 in Dujiangyan city, Sichuan province. Home range of “Shenglin 1” was 16 km2 during the study period, and mean daily range was about 231 m. There were three periods including seeking habitats, establishing temporary home range and long-distance migrate based on its activity and settling duration. Daily activity frequency was significant difference among different months, but was not significant difference between November and December. The daily activity frequency exhibited a gradually decreasing trend from August to October, and got the peak value at November and December. Daily activity reached a peak between 4:00 and 11:00 in the morning, and got a trough between 12:00 and 14:00, but the activity peak was not obvious in the afternoon. The lowest trough of daily activity appeared between 20:00 and 23:00.
