Quantitative Analysis of Musk Components by Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry

Abstract:Musk is one of the precious animal products used in traditional Chinese medicine. Musk sampleswere analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) in this study. It was found that musk contained a complex mixture of different steroids. The steroidal components of different samples were also analyzed and compared. Sixteen kinds of steroids in musk samples were confirmed by NIST05 library searching.Three pharmacologically active components (muscone,cholesterol, and etiocholan-3α-ol-17-one) were quantified in the different samples. The results showed that changes in cholesterol and etiocholan--ol-17-one were obvious in all musk samples.In contrast, muscone levels in musk samples were stable (30.1~45.2 mg/g). In order to distinguish between musk samples, a hierarchical cluster analysis was performed. The results showed that the 9 musk samples could be divided into two groups. With the help of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, the quality of musk samples can be analyzed quickly and accurately
