A New Species of Genus Scutariella (Rhabdocoela: Scutariellidae) and Molecular Phylogenetic Analysis

Abstract:This study reports a new species of Scutariellidae:Scutariella sinensis sp. nov. and related morphological description and phylogenetic analysis. Diagnoses of S. sinensis sp. nov.:(1) Two vitelline glands of S. sinensis sp. nov. are located at both sides dorsally alongside with the intestine and fused at posterior end of the intestine, which are U-shaped overall; (2) The genital opening of S. sinensis sp. nov. is located ventrally at the anterior end of the intestine; (3) The pharyngeal glands of S. sinensis sp. nov. are massive and located at both sides between the pharynx and the intestine;(4) The testes and ovaries of S. sinensis sp. nov. are situated ventrally at the anterior 1/3 intestine. Phylogenetic analysis was also conducted based on the 18S rDNA and 28S rDNA of S. sinensis sp. nov., and thus provide the first molecular data of Scutariellidae to establish the classification of the new species in Temnocephalida and the evolutional relations with Trematoda.
