Microscopic Analysis of the Scales of Garra and Placocheilus (Teleostei: Cypriniformes)

Abstract:The taxonomic status of Garra and Placocheilus (Teleostei: Cypriniformes) was still remained unclear. And the main point was whether Placocheilus was an independent and valid genus. In this study, we attempted to find new evidence for the real taxonomy by comparing the microstructure of scale. The results showed that 18 species in these two genera could be divided into three categories according to the combination of scale shape, denticular knobbles on the circuli of scale lateral region and the shape of scale focus; and all the 18 fish species could be also divided into 3 groups based on the differences that with or without proboscis in front of nostrils and developing degree of free posterior edge of oral sucking disc. Comparing the two results above, only G. kempi and G. tengchongenis were not matched. The results suggested that Garra and Placocheilus should be independent and valid genera. However, it was necessary to reclassify the species that originally divided into Garra and Placocheilus to objectively reflect the real and natural status.
