Ophidian Diversity in National Mt. Mang Nature Reserve, Hunan

Abstract:During 1988 to 1998, 750 specimens of 46 snake species belonging to 25 genera and 4 families have been collected and recorded in National Mt. Mang Nature Reserve. Up date, there are totally 50 snake species belonging to 27 genera and 4 families found inNationalMt.Mang Nature Reserve. A list of the snake species is given in the table. The species density, faunal elements, distribution pattern, and medicogeographic division (Zhao, 1991) are discussed. TheMt.Mangit-viper, the most giant species of poisonous snakes inChina, is known only from this region; the importance of its conservation is specially emphasized.
