Abstract:The Yunnan salamander, Cynops wolterstorffi (Boulenger, 1905), is endemic to China and had been found only in Kunming Lake, a freshwater lake in Yunnan Plateau. It extincted in the wild in the end of the 1970s. The factors caused its extinction were mainly due to reclaim land from the lake in 1970, seriously water pollution, construction of buildings, reduction of aquatic plants, and introduction of foreign species. The reasons mentioned above deeply affected habitat, food, and reproduction of Yunnan salamander. The extinction of Yunnan salamander provides a good experience and lesson in protection of wildlife, especially amphibians and reptiles.
