Abstract:The catalogue of biodiversity is the basic work of management and scientific research of natural reserves. From July 2016 to June 2017, camera traps were installed to investigate the diversity of mammals and birds in Qianfoshan National Nature Reserve, Sichuan, China. In this study, with an intensive survey effort of 3333 camera days at 20 locations, we collected 2355 photographs, 1867 videos and 436 independent records and identified 17 wild mammal species belonging to 10 families and 4 orders, 18 wild bird species belonging to 8 families and 2 orders. Among the detected species, three species were category I state key wild animals and eight species were category II state key protected animals. One species was evaluated as Endangered by IUCN, five as Vulnerable and one as Near Threatened. In the survey, a new record of Grey head thrush (Turdus rubrocanus) of Minshan mountain was found. Based on the relative abundance index, Golden snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellanae)(RAI=2.37), Tufted deer (Elaphodus cephalophus)(RAI=1.83), Wild boar (Sus scrofa)(RAI=1.17), Rock squirrels (Sciurotamias davidianus)(RAI=1.02), Red muntjac (Muntiacus muntjak)(RAI=0.21) were ranked as the top most abundant mammal species. The wild birds with the highest relative abundance were the Galliformes birds, such as Golden pheasant (Chrysolophus pictus) (RAI =3.21) and Temminck's Tragopan (Tragopan temminckii)(RAI =1.05), followed by Leiothrichidae birds of Passeriformes. Based on infrared camera technology, the resource status of animals and birds in Qianfoshan National Nature Reserve was obtained, and this data could be used as a useful supplement to the results obtained by the traditional survey methods before this survey, meanwhile, through continuous monitoring by infrared cameras, these additional biodiversity data will contribute to long-term monitoring and conservation management of the reserve.
