Abstract:Deer rely on visual, olfactory and auditory cues to communicate. Vocal signals constitute a very efficient system of communication, and play a central role between the members of the group. In this paper, we listed various types of calls in Cervidae, such as rutting calls, alarm calls, distress calls and contact calls. Then we summarized vocal mechanisms of deer. We also discussed the relationship between acoustic parameters and information of signaler, effects of calls on reproductive behaviors for both sexes, intraspecific and interspecific discriminations of vocal signals. Then we introduced research methods of vocal communition in Cervidae. Finally, we proposed some potential study fields for the vocal communication in Cervidae and provided positive suggestions.
