Abstract:We studied nest site selection of Grey-backed shrike Lanius tephronotus inhabiting Napahai Nature Reserve (N27°51’,E99°38’) between May to June in 2013. We found that the Grey-backed Shrike showed an affinity to nest in thorny bushes. A total of 78.5% of the nests (n=62 nests) were located in firethorn Pyracantha sp. bushes. Whether the branches have thorns is the primary factor of selection of nesting tree for Grey-backed Shrikes. The principal component analysis demonstrated that there were five types of factors affecting the nest site selection of the Grey-backed Shrikes, including distance (distance to roads, distance to settlements), safety (number and length of thorns), feeding habitat (% of the farmland), concealment (crown width and height of nesting bushes) and nesting habitat (% of the bushes). Our results suggest that the Grey-backed Shrikes prefer to nest in thorny bushes that is close to the settlement and surrounded by large area of farmland. The encroachment of the house and road construction on the bushes is the main factor that threatens the survival of the Grey-backed Shrikes.
